NEW MASON CLINIC UNIT BENEFITS FROM FIBEROCK WALL AND CEILING LININGS

Featuring exceptional impact, fire, moisture and mould resistance, USG Boral Fiberock was the ideal choice for wall and ceiling linings in the Mason Clinic's new unit.

The Mason Clinic, a provider of regional forensic psychiatry services in Auckland, has recently expanded with the addition of a new secure forensic mental health unit.

During design, extra care was taken in selecting robust, low maintenance wall and ceiling linings. While fibrous plaster over plywood is often used on similar builds, the architects and DHB Asset Management staff looked further afield, conducting trials in a mock-up area in a similar project to determine the best option. Following these trials, USG Boral's Fiberock Aqua-Tough was selected as the preferred product for the project, and was specified for wall and ceiling linings in patient areas of the unit.

Fiberock is a unique, gypsum fibre board with a water-resistant core. The paperless fibreboard offers exceptional impact, fire, sound, moisture and mould resistance — key requirements for the safety and comfort of patients, and the longevity of the unit. It is a cost-effective product and is easy to cut and install — ensuring greater building efficiencies.

"It's a far faster product to install than fibrous plaster," explains Bob Yellowlees, Project Manager, RCC Ltd. "It's obviously a robust product, suitable for service users in that it's very hard to dig into and cause damage to — very low maintenance and strong."

To further improve the in-service life of the Fiberock, USG Boral also supplied Sheetrock Durabond — a specialty joint compound with proven higher joint strength to reduce the likelihood of any joints cracking over time. Sheetrock Paper-Faced Beads were also supplied — an alternative to traditional metal beads that offer higher impact resistance and are less prone to cracking.

Yellowlees notes that while he initially had reservations about Fiberock as he hadn't used the product before, he was pleased with the result and wouldn't have issues recommending it for similar institutions. "It was a product that was readily available, easily installed, and we ended up with a good finish."

In addition to these products in patient areas, USG Boral also supplied Sheetrock®, Firestop® and MultistopTM 4 plasterboards for public and administration areas. Backed by a comprehensive warranty, this full package of NZBC-compliant standard, fire and wet area linings ensures a resilient, safe and hygienic facility for patients and staff of the unit.
